About the Work The Greeks celebrated the body as pure form. I start with form and use it to represent basic emotional truths. I have used a variety of materials to explore the figure in three dimensions: clay, bronze, resin and plaster. I am currently working with traditional clay and bronze materials and sculpting abstract forms from the figure and nature. I also continue to work with oil on linen and paper and plan to do more monoprinting and mixed media on paper. I am fascinated by the idea of what happens to a figurative form while falling or floating in space. If I am able to leave the viewer with some kind of feeling of vertigo then I feel the piece is a success. The media and current events are another source of inspiration. I collect and catalogue images and articles that interest me. I like to push the solidity/fluidity of the image. Some figures have very few defining edges and can be transparent in places. The resin sculptures are translucent and have objects embedded in them. The viewer is directed towards the interior of the piece as well as the surface. I enjoy working layer by layer. I like to show the process of the piece and the history of the mark-making. Most paintings or sculptures are a struggle for me from beginning to end, but once in a while - if I am lucky - the image will emerge almost on its own. This is the joy of creating art. |
